Wind Off the Corridor Changes How Siding Goes On

The Valley floor is a wind corridor. Gusts funnel down the Spokane River valley and run across the open flats with almost nothing to break them, and wind takes siding apart two ways: lift and fatigue. A vinyl panel that isn't locked into the course below catches a gust like a sail, rattles for a season, then peels. A panel nailed tight through the face can't expand, so it buckles instead. We hang vinyl the way the manufacturer rates it for wind — every course locked, nails centered in the slots at the specified spacing, snug but not pinned — and on exposed lots we spec panels with reinforced nailing hems rather than the thinnest gauge on the truck.

Fiber cement earns its keep here for the same reason. Hardie publishes a fastener schedule — nail type, spacing, penetration into framing — and a board fastened to that schedule doesn't care about a gusty afternoon. Most of the wind damage we're called out for traces back to fasteners that hit sheathing instead of studs, or a stretched nailing pattern a previous crew used to save time. LP SmartSide, with its long workable lengths and impact resistance, is a strong pick on the most exposed lots east toward Greenacres.

South Walls With No Shade

The newer Valley subdivisions were built on open ground, and most of that ground still has no mature trees. A south- or west-facing wall on a shadeless lot takes full sun from mid-morning until dusk, all summer. That's why builder vinyl out here fades in twenty years instead of forty, why dark panels ripple, and why you can read the outline of every shrub that ever stood against the wall. Hardboard on the older ranches cooks differently — the sun side sheds paint first, then drinks water all winter through the bare spots.

It's also why we push factory finishes over field paint on these lots. Hardie's ColorPlus coating is baked on and warrantied against fade in a way a site-painted wall can't match, and on a wall that gets ten hours of direct sun, that difference shows up years sooner than it would on a shaded South Hill street.

1. On-site estimate — we measure, check the existing siding's fastening and condition, and note your lot's wind and sun exposure. Free.
2. Written spec — product line, color, trim package, and rot-contingency terms, fixed in writing.
3. Permitting — Spokane Valley has issued its own permits since incorporating in 2003. We file with the City of Spokane Valley and handle the process.
4. Tear-off and correction — old vinyl or hardboard off, sheathing repaired, wrap and flashing detailed before a single course goes up.
5. Install and walkthrough — fastened to manufacturer schedule, sealed, cleaned up, and walked with you at completion.
